“Life as a refugee is full of challenges — from navigating healthcare and housing to understanding schools and local systems. You are not alone. We understand what you’re going through, and here to help you feel supported and regain control over your life. We want to give support to protect your wellbeing and help when things just feel like too much”

Mission

Open Door Ukraine exists to support Ukrainian refugees, displaced individuals, and professionals in the UK by providing trusted guidance, communication assistance, and wellbeing mentoring. We combine cultural understanding with professional expertise to help people navigate complex healthcare, social services, and life systems with confidence and clarity.

Our approach is relationship-based: support is continuous, adaptable, and responsive to each client’s evolving needs. By offering practical strategies, empathetic guidance, and professional insight, we empower clients to gain autonomy, rebuild stability, and make informed choices in their daily lives.

Through these services, we aim to strengthen both individual and community resilience, fostering integration, independence, and dignity. Our work bridges professional authority, lived experience, and cultural trust — ensuring Ukrainian families and professionals can recover, adjust, and thrive in the UK.

Need

As of the most recent available data, there are roughly 250,000–255,000 Ukrainian refugees in the United Kingdom, having fled the war following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This includes people arriving under the UK’s bespoke visa schemes such as Homes for Ukraine and the Ukraine Family Scheme, combined with estimates of those still living in the UK.

Survey-based research provides insight into English proficiency among this population:

  • Approximately 57% of Ukrainian refugees report speaking English fluently or “a fair amount,” leaving around 43% (~107,000–112,000 people) with limited English speaking ability.

  • Reading and writing skills are lower: only 61% can read English most things or a fair amount, and 47% can write English most things or a fair amount.

  • Around 37% of adults report that limited English restricts their ability to work, illustrating the intersection of language barriers and economic integration.

Evidence also highlights significant mental health and well-being risks:

  • Post-migration stressors including housing insecurity, employment barriers, language difficulties, and separation from family compound war-related trauma, contributing to anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms, and general psychological distress.

  • Refugees often face barriers to accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate services, which can exacerbate isolation and hinder integration.

  • Children and adolescents are similarly affected, with studies showing that targeted interventions significantly reduce depression and anxiety symptoms when culturally tailored.

Taken together, these factors create high and ongoing demand for accessible, culturally informed support, addressing not only immediate needs but also long-term social integration, professional reintegration, and psychological resilience.
